November Dahlia Notes

November is one of the busiest months, finish off your planting of late cuttings and seedlings which should all be big enough to plant out. Keep up the use of slug and snail pellets, as this is one of the young plants most vulnerable times.

Tie up the young plants when they reach 12" to 18" in height. Depending on how early you planted, the buds should be starting to appear over the next few weeks. It takes approximately 25-30+ days from pea-sized bud to full bloom. This varies depending on the type and size of the flower.

Spray every two to three weeks with a combined fungicide, insecticide mixture. These systemic sprays work well, because you are covering diseases and insects in one application. If you use something like Shield or Super Shield you can also add "Thrive" or another liguid fertilizer at the same time. Make sure your sprays are compatible by thoroughly reading the labels before you start.

Continue to tie up your plants as they grow taller, and this will help prevent any damage from strong winds. Keep up the watering schedule, and remember a good watering once a week is far better than a little every day. This only wets the surface, and doesn't get down to the roots. Be careful when weeding around the Dahlias because their roots can be easily disturbed. Pull out the weeds when they are tiny, and there won't be a problem later on. Do not hoe the ground once the first buds begin to appear on your plants. This is about 6 weeks after planting.
