DAHLIAS in New Zealand
This web site is devoted to Dahlias, and we hope the information
it contains will be of interest not only to exhibitors but to the general
gardening public. The show photos may encourage others to have a go, and
they will be amazed at the pleasure they will get from seeing their own
flowers on the show bench.
We exhibit at ten or so shows each season, and photos from these shows
give a good indication of which cultivars are consistently doing well.
These same exhibition dahlias will also do very well in the average garden,
and will have good stems and plenty of flowers for picking for the vase.
The National Dahlia Society of New Zealand offers two publications a year of its
magazine "Dahlia", and the price for this is included in the yearly subscription. This is an excellent magazine, with plenty of information, photos, show dates and results. The National Dahlia society of NZ now has its own web page: www.nzdahliasociety.50megs.com and it is well worth a visit.
Most clubs hold Tuber sales in September and October each year,and you
can obtain good reliable stock of the most popular and successful Dahlia
varieties at very nominal prices. Dahlia Shows are held in late January,
February and early March, and these Shows present an ideal opportunity to
make a note of the varieties that appeal to you. Some clubs take orders at
their shows, or they can put you in touch with the growers.
